Septoplasty: Proven Effective for Treating a Deviated Nasal Septum

The NAIROS study, a major UK clinical trial published in The BMJ, has shown that septoplasty (surgery to straighten a deviated nasal septum) is a highly effective treatment for adults suffering from persistent nasal blockage.

In this large study involving 378 patients across 17 NHS hospitals, researchers compared the results of septoplasty with medical treatment using nasal steroid and saline sprays. After six months, patients who underwent septoplasty reported much greater improvement in breathing, sinus symptoms, and quality of life compared with those who used sprays alone.

On average, symptom scores in the surgical group improved twice as much as those managed with medication. Patients also experienced better nasal airflow and overall comfort.

While minor side effects such as temporary bleeding or infection occurred in a small number of patients, the study confirmed that septoplasty is safe and provides long-lasting relief for people whose nasal obstruction is caused by a deviated septum.

If you continue to experience nasal blockage, congestion, or difficulty breathing through your nose despite using nasal sprays, septoplasty may offer a permanent solution. Our ENT specialists can assess your nasal airflow and discuss whether this proven surgical treatment is right for you.
